Depression: A Battle You Can Win

Because of a recent incident that happened, I felt compelled to do this post that could be of some help to you or someone you know who could use this information. Please share!

Depression is a serious mental health condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It can be challenging to know how to help someone who is struggling with depression, but there are several things you can do to support them.

Here are some tips to help someone with depression:

  1. Recognize the symptoms: Learn about the symptoms of depression so that you can recognize them in your loved one. Symptoms may include feelings of sadness, hopelessness, irritability, and fatigue, among others 1.

  2. Be supportive: Let your loved one know that you are there for them and that you care about them. Encourage them to talk about their feelings and listen without judgment 1.

  3. Encourage treatment: Encourage your loved one to seek professional help. Treatment for depression may include therapy, medication, or a combination of both. Offer to help them find a therapist or doctor if they need it 12.

  4. Take care of yourself: Supporting someone with depression can be emotionally taxing, so it’s essential to take care of yourself too. Make sure you’re getting enough sleep, eating well, and taking time for yourself 1.

Remember that depression is a treatable condition, and with the right support, your loved one can recover. If you’re unsure how to help, don’t hesitate to reach out to a mental health professional for guidance 123.

You're Never Too Old to Exercise

Staying active is important for older adults to maintain their health and independence. Here are some tips to help them stay motivated to exercise:

-Make it fun: Try to find ways to make exercise enjoyable and interesting. Some people like to walk on a treadmill at the gym, while others find that kind of activity boring. Be creative and try new activities to keep your interest alive. Do things you enjoy but pick up the pace. Do all four types of exercise — endurance, strength, balance, and flexibility. The variety helps keep things interesting!

- Find ways to fit exercise into your day: You are more likely to exercise if it’s a convenient part of your day. Try exercising first thing in the morning or combine physical activity with a task that’s already part of your day, such as walking the dog or doing household chores.

- Make exercise a social activity: Many people agree that an “exercise buddy” keeps them going. Take a walk during lunch with coworkers or try a dance class — salsa, tango, square dancing — it’s up to you. Use family gatherings as a time to play team sports or do outdoor activities.

- Keep track of your exercise progress: The best way to stay motivated is to measure and celebrate your successes. Make an exercise and physical activity plan that works for you and track your daily physical activity. Find new ways to increase your physical activity and keep track of your monthly progress to see improvement.  If you need any inspiration, google Dick Van Dyke who as of now is 97 years old and has some good advice for you to stay active.

Blood Sugar spike: Cause and Effect

A blood sugar spike is a rapid increase in blood sugar levels, often brought on when eating too much food containing carbohydrates. When you eat food containing carbohydrates, your body breaks down the carbohydrates into a simple sugar called glucose. Glucose then enters your bloodstream. When the amount of glucose in your blood rises, it sends a signal to your pancreas to release a hormone called insulin. Insulin’s job is to act like a key to unlock the doors of different cells in your body. This allows glucose to leave the bloodstream and enter the cells to be used for energy or be stored for later use. Without insulin, glucose stays in the bloodstream, causing blood glucose (or blood sugar) levels to rise too high. This can lead to serious health problems.

Symptoms of a blood sugar spike vary from person to person and may include blurry vision, dry mouth, fatigue, headache, increased thirst, and frequent urination. Sometimes, blood sugar spike symptoms are subtle and go unnoticed, but you feel it when the spike resolves and your blood sugar drops. This can cause low blood sugar symptoms such as anxiety, confusion, dizziness, hunger, irritability, nervousness, shaking, and sweating 1

To manage and prevent blood sugar spikes from occurring, it’s important to monitor your carbohydrate intake and choose foods that are low on the glycemic index (GI). The GI is a measure of how quickly foods containing carbohydrates raise your blood sugar levels 1You can also try incorporating more fiber into your diet or increasing your physical activity level 1.

Understanding Loneliness

Loneliness is a state of mind that can affect your mental health and self-esteem. Loneliness is known to increase the risk of developing depression, anxiety, and even dementia. People who live alone often crave human contact but their state of mind makes it hard to connect.  Other circumstances may be the cause of their condition such as physical isolation, loss of a loved one, illness or disability, and transitioning into retirement.

Helping someone who feels lonely can make a significant difference in their well-being. Here are some strategies you can consider:

- Be There: Simply being present for someone can provide comfort. Reach out and ask how they're feeling. Sometimes, knowing that someone is there to listen can alleviate loneliness.

- Assure Them: Let the person know that feeling lonely is completely normal. Reassure them that it's possible to feel better with the right help.

- Encourage Social Connections:

    - Join a Class or Club: Encourage them to participate in activities they enjoy. Whether it's an art class, exercise group, or book club, joining such groups exposes them to people who share similar interests. It also provides a sense of belonging and helps stave off loneliness.

    - Volunteer: Volunteering for a cause they believe in can also help. It allows them to meet others, be part of a group, and create new experiences.

- Seek Professional Help: If their loneliness persists, suggest seeking professional assistance. They can talk to a friend, family member, health professional, or counselor. Organizations like Samaritans offer support and someone to talk to.

Remember that small gestures of kindness and understanding can go a long way in helping someone combat loneliness.

If you know someone lonely, just being there for them and having a conversation goes a long way to make a big difference in their mindset.

Communication; the key to a successful relationship

                                                                                                              By M.N.Curry

  You can find quite a few books written on getting your Ex Back and making him fall crazy in love or how to blow his mind with a simple text, and so on but it goes without saying that real communication is the key to a good relationship, that's just a start.  Even with all the relevant information found within book pages and articles, it takes two to Tango, so to speak. There are other ingredients involved in this mix and according to Psychiatry Today; building a solid relationship includes, sharing values, having common interests, emotional support, physical intimacy, and the willingness to work through challenges. Relationships aren't one-sided or easy and will probably test your ego. I know couples who have been together for years, and what I have observed is that the main foundation of their success is that they put each other's welfare at the center of the relationship.  Every relationship is unique and requires effort from both partners. So if you can honestly listen, control your emotions, pick up on body language, and be able to take a verbal body punch (take criticism) then you're in.  {Men, are you listening?}

Many years ago my uncle told me, "You never really know a person until you live with them."  I found that to be true and I also found that you really should learn as much as you can about that person you plan to devote a great bit of your time to before your hormones take control. Today relationships have a few more considerations that need to be factored in like empathy, reliability, mutual respect, and having similar goals and values.  And be aware that there are some who want to control and manipulate.  No one's perfect, keep that in mind while you think beyond the obvious.

Growing Younger, Is It Possible?

I remember in the not-too-distant past, folks started noticing that people who were living healthier lifestyles were living longer, which makes perfect sense.  For at least a few hundred years there has been an effort to find the fountain of youth to out whit Mother Nature.  Since 1474 the famed Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon the idea of the Fountain of Youth has intrigued everyone.  The obsession is to maintain youth, stay wrinkle-free, and keep from shuffling off the mortal coil for as long as possible.  It conjures up the novel written by Oscar Wilde in 1891, The Picture of Dorian Gray, a story about a young man who purchases eternal youth at the expense of his soul.  That is a little far-fetched for today's expectations, but you know where I'm going with this...right?  So where are we today on this quest to look younger, there are a few things to look into while you wait for the fountain.

To improve the appearance of aging skin, wrinkles, and fine lines look into products that contain Hyaluronic acid; which helps retain moisture and plumps up the shin.

Antioxidants; include green tea, and vitamin E, ingredients lessen sun damage that threatens collagen.

Amino-peptides; stimulate collagen production and improve skin elasticity.

Niacinamide; helps reduce redness and improve skin tone.

These are but a few ingredients found in anti-aging creams, but let it be known that you should always consult a dermatologist, and of course, it goes along with a healthy diet.

Preventing Colon Cancer/ Screening

Q&A: Options for colon cancer screening

                                    by , For The Inquirer

Q&A: Options for colon cancer screening

The human colon. Colorectal cancer occurs in the colon or rectum when abnormal growths, called polyps, form and become cancerous over time.

Question: Is the fecal smear test my best colorectal-cancer-screening option?

Answer: Being screened for colorectal cancer is crucial. Of cancers that affect both men and women, colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second- leading cancer killer in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

CRC occurs in the colon or rectum when abnormal growths, called polyps, form and become cancerous over time.

Symptoms of CRC can include weight loss, abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, and anemia.

However, the beginning stages of CRC may not show symptoms. Therefore, being screened is the best preventive method.

There are several screening options available, including:

The “gold standard” of colon screening is a colonoscopy. Patients prepare for a colonoscopy by drinking special “prep” liquids to clean the bowels. During the procedure, patients are sedated as a flexible colonoscope is inserted into the rectum. A gastroenterologist will look for polyps and other abnormalities. This screening test should be performed every 10 years after the age of 50, according to the American Cancer Society.

FIT is a stool-based test that can be done at your home. A tiny amount of stool is placed into a vial, which you mail to a laboratory for analysis. There is no preparation needed for this test. If lab results show a positive result for abnormalities, the next step is to schedule a colonoscopy. FIT is good for early detection and should be performed every year.

Flexible sigmoidoscopy with FIT is an alternative to both the colonoscopy and FIT tests. Flexible sigmoidoscope does not require a “prep” drink, but the patient does require several enemas to clean out the lower part of the colon. There is also no need for IV sedation, but you can opt to have it. For this test, a flexible tube is placed into the rectum and examines only the lower colon. This is similar to a colonoscopy, but it doesn’t scan the entire colon. If the lab results come back positive, schedule a colonoscopy. This test should be performed every five years along with a FIT test every year.

Each colorectal screening test has its advantages and disadvantages. Talk to your doctor to decide which test is the right choice for you.

Steven Lichtenstein, D.O., is the chief of the division of gastroenterology at Mercy Health System.

The crazy cost of an emergency room visit is getting out of hand and financial range for most people.  Even if you have a decent healthcare program you are likely to spend $120 to $265 just to get seen. Heaven forbid if you have to be admitted as an inpatient.  But what about the other essentials you'll need not to mention adding in the cost of food and other necessities. So instead of hitting the panic button why not be prepared for those emergencies with the knowledge that will have you prepared.
There are several items in your very home right now that could save you a trip to the hospital. Find out what you need to store right now just in case. The more knowledge you have about these things the less stress you'll have whenever these events present themselves.  The Home Doctor is something that you absolutely need around your house or at least someplace you can easily get to.

It is comforting to know that if you are within an hour's drive, you can reach the sliding doors of medical help. But what if some unforeseen small disaster happened that you could take care of yourself if you were only prepared with the right information and knowledge. And what if all the things you needed were right in your kitchen.  Let's say it's Friday night around 12;30 and the nearest hospital is totally overwhelmed with patients this presently happened to a family member at their local hospital, in which they spent a total of 15 hours waiting and STILL was never seen!  Feeling helplessly frustrated and pissed off they when to a different facility the next day.  All this is to say, that some basic knowledge of a few natural ingredients that you have around the house will resolve an issue or give you time until the issue is dealt with.

Most people in South Florida remember Hurricane Katrina and what a disaster that was, but nothing compared to the medical horrors and hardships in Venezuela. I am not a doomsday prepper, but having certain common household supplies on hand can increase your preparedness and allow you to get more advanced help.

As a side note, the Combat Support Hospital Unit I was attached to spent almost a year isolated in the desert of Iraq with the 120-degree mid-day temperatures, we needed to have the most important supplies available at any given moment. and it kept us going until supplies arrived. Knowing that we were prepared long before the action started and with all the supplies we needed gave us a sense of relief.  After 47 years in the medical field, Just Saying!

3 Things You Should Know About Cognitive Decline

This site may contain affiliate links, if clicked and a product is purchased I may get a commission at no extra cost.

There's a relationship between Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and tinnitus. Some studies have shown that Tinnitus patients may have a higher risk of developing Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.

Tinnitus is when a person hears a ringing sound in the ear without any external source.  It is normally not a serious condition and goes away with treatment.  Some of the symptoms associated with tinnitus are, singing in the ear without an external source, whoosing sound that matches the heartbeat, ringing in the ear, and clicking noise.

Age-related hearing loss is the most common cause of tinnitus in seniors.  Other causes are blood vessel damage in the brain near the ear, high blood pressure or overactive thyroid, and tumors in the head or neck near the ear.

Tinnitus can lead to sleep issues, fatigue, stress, difficulty concentrating, cardiovascular problems, problems with your memory, depression, and stroke.  There are medications available that can help so if you are experiencing severe or persistent symptoms it's time to get a consultation to solve this issue before it develops any further.

One product that I recommend as a treatment for tinnitus is  Quietum-Plus, aside from being a good product, it has over 11,ooo 5-star reviews.  If you need more reassurance, follow the link to find out more. With some of these products, you may be better off taking a big glass of ginseng or green tea which has shown to be effective in reducing tinnitus symptoms.

Alzheimer's and Parkinson's are two distinct neurological disorders that have some similarities and differences-dementia is a symptom of Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's can cause dementia over time. A couple of good products treat tinnitus, some good and some not-so-good.

                                     Do You Remember Me?
                                          A Sad Realization

One of the saddest things you will ever witness is to watch a family member try to communicate with a patient who is suffering from Alzheimer's disease.  I've watched it many times and it truly breaks my heart to see the helplessness in someone's eyes as they walk closer to being recognized and then the question is asked: "Do you remember me?"  I have seen the results of this awful disease strip away the careers of some prominent, once-skillful surgeons.  To see it suck the life out of families who suffered along with them as they watched helplessly as cognitive dissonance builds. If you know or are aware of someone who is constantly forgetful, especially if you or they are over 40, suggest that they get evaluated.  Time is not on your side.  Forgetfulness, by the way, is a form of dementia, so before you forget, make an appointment to see a physician to make sure you're not in a

I am reminded by those painfully honest reflections in the mirror that I am in fact aging so I venture to understand the cognitive process to improve my mental abilities and how to hold on to the brain cells that I have and implement a few preventive measures that can slow down the buildup of Amyloid, which is a protein produced by the body that can clump together to create a plaque that could show up in the brain that could affect memory/thinking issues.  And as we age, the neurotransmitter (Acetylcholine) that handles short-term memory gets weak.  So, what do we do?  First, if you have concerns, get tested, first and foremost.  A test will bring to light issues that should be addressed that may hasten your cognitive decline.  Then improve your diet.  Fresh fruits and vegetables are expensive nowadays but at least treat yourself to good nutrition and exercise to get the old blood flowing. Some supplements available may be effective in treating or improving cognitive abilities. One such product is called  Neuro-Thrive Brain Support., this is an affiliate link that I recommend and if you go to this site and make a purchase I could get a commission.  You will learn more about this product if you are okay with listening to a scripted presentation.

Life is Like a Roll of Toilet Paper

Life Is Like a Roll of Toilet Paper
There will come a time when reality awakens you to the present state of your own immortality.  Mine came at the age of seventy-two in the form of a stroke that left my cognitive abilities slightly diminished until I found ways, along with therapy, to aid me in my quest to regain a good portion of my cognitive abilities.  For a while, I had to substitute words that would fit the thought I was trying to convey.  I pulled out every trick in the book to try to regain as much as I could to restore and increase the reaction to recall words that were once a conditioned response.  I'd play those free word games that are stuck on my cell phone that put my memory to the test.  The real shock came when a good friend called from Washington D.C. to check on my progress and as best I could, tried to hold a conversation without sounding like a three-year-old.  Finding words to put together that made sense was a chore and I remember asking him about his own health and sadly one month later he died of COVID-19.  We were both up in age and still breathing air without thoughts of shuffling off this mortal coil just yet.  But realize that we are all just specks on the timeline of eternity, and we are not here forever.   It was a scary time and after almost 47 years in the medical field. not giving too much consideration to my own peace of mind. Spending almost 56 hours a week in an operating room doesn't give you much time for anything else.
And this brings me to the title of this blog. About 20 years ago a patient and I were having a general conversation about life and the way things have changed.  Then he introduced me to a saying I have used for the last 20 years. It goes like this, "Life is like a roll of toilet paper, the closer you get to the end, the faster it goes."  Take a minute to think about that and the truth that this simple statement makes.

21 Days To A Better You

by: Jeanne Angel St.Cyr

How you see yourself in your mind is what you are going to manifest in your life. You will always rise above your own perceived expectations. How do see yourself? Are you a positive, outgoing individual? Or are you a quiet little mouse hiding in the corner afraid of the future?

You have control over your mind and emotions, simply put you have the power already inside you to determine which path your life will follow. You can reprogram your mind through meditations, positive thoughts, and saying or writing out positive affirmations. The word affirmations means to make true. What do you want to change in your life?

Make a list. Number your list in order of importance to you. Decide what one thing you want to work on. Only one goal or dream at a time, so as not to overload yourself. It has been said that it takes only 21 days to make or break a habit. You could be only 21 days from your greatest successes! How great would that be? You may feel that you have a long way to go, but look back at how far you've already come?

I quote from my book, "Inspirations", page 36: "Don't stay locked away in a prison of remorse, of things done or not done, of choices made or not made. Let yourself be free and enjoy a brand new beginning!" And on the very next page, page 37, it says: "Now is the time. Do not delay. No more excuses, just start now!" On page 49, I quote: "If you don't take action on your dreams and ideas, how can you expect to manifest success? You must take the 1st step, no one else can do it for you! Your never too old and it's never too late to start. Seize the moment, and take that 1st step!

Green Tea Fights Fatal Conditions

                                                                       by: Darren Haynes

The excellent health advantages of green tea are not limited to weight loss. It is the natural compounds in green tea, titled catechins, that provide a plenitude of other health benefits.

Grown men who administer themselves high doses of polyphenols like catechin have 75 percent less probability of having a stroke. Green tea reduces the amount of bad LDL cholesterol and raises good HDL cholesterol count. This brings forth a more beneficial balance between LDL and HDL plasma levels. Additionally, there is confirmation that polyphenol catechins can help thin the blood and lessen blood pressure.

Protection from cancer is associated with green tea drinking, too. Scientists have shown that damage to our DNA is one known determinant of cancer. Our DNA strands come under attack from thousands of unstable oxygen molecules every day. This is a normal thing for DNA. The amazing news is that our cells can repair itself.

Still, our DNA can cave in to this assailant and the DNA strings will become permanently damaged. Damaged DNA will produce a mutant code and start creating cancerous cells! It is then great for us that the antioxidants of green tea can head off and subdue free radicals. This helps reduce our possibility of falling victim to cancer! Vast amounts of research have also concluded that green tea reduces the risk of prostate cancer, lung cancer, bowel cancer, skin cancer, kidney cancer, pancreatic cancer, and bladder cancer!

Green tea polyphenols elevate our count of white blood cells. A high white blood cell count is essential to a powerful immune system. There are two different white blood cells that polyphenols can strengthen - B-cells and T-cells. B-cells construct antibodies that defeat foreign objects and infectious microorganisms. T-cells engage particular invading organisms such as viruses and malignant cells.

For the purpose of detoxification, the liver is our biggest weapon. It sponges up foreign chemicals from our blood and with the help of metabolic agents, chemically alters poisons into inert soluble materials. The harmful substances can then be excreted into the feces for elimination. With the levels of pollution in our environment and in our food in this age the liver experiences vast levels of stress! On the upside, catechins come to our aid! These compounds in green tea really do protect the liver from a number of these harmful substances by aiding the enzymes specific to detoxification. In this process, the liver is spared somewhat

Exercise and Cellulite

Exercise and Cellulite

When Mike turned 65, he was 25 pounds overweight. By strict dieting, he shed the extra pounds, but he lost more weight; he also lost his energy and vitality. He was always exhausted, and his friends, seeing his gaunt, drawn face, worried about his health.
By the time volunteered for a particular fitness program two years later, he had put 25 extra pounds back on. After 6 months of exercise and some willpower at the dinner table, Mike slimmed down again. This time he felt better than ever, brimming with energy and glowing with good health.

What made the difference? The first time Mike lost weight; the second time he lost fat. The distinction is important. According to research, a large portion of the weight lost by dieting alone is active tissue, such as muscle and connective tissue, while a smaller fraction is excess fat. Exercise has the opposite effect. It increased his lean body mass and decreased his excess fat.
The same thing goes with cellulite. Most people tend to think that cellulite is only present in people who are obese. That is why they sometimes associate cellulite with fats and obesity.
Actually, even if cellulite refers to the chain of wrinkled “fat cells” and “subcutaneous connective tissues” beneath the layer of the skin, it should never be associated with people who are fat or obese. In fact, many people have cellulite but are not fat at all.

In reality, nobody knows the main reason why some people accumulate cellulite. However, there are some factors that health experts are considering such as the structure of the fat cells or the poison that entered the body. Some experts say it may be caused by some hormonal changes in the body. But none of these things has been proven to cause cellulitis.
However, the only main reason why most of the cellulite cases are abundant in women is that the connective tissues of women are more rigid and firm than men. Hence, whenever a woman gets fat, the fatty cells tend to swell and get bigger. It creates a protruding appearance to the skin producing an “orange peel” look.
For this reason, women are more prone to cellulite than men. That is why women need to be more careful with their bodies as they have higher chances of accumulating cellulite.

  Fats and Cellulite

With the many cases of obese people having cellulitis in their bodies, most of them believe that their cellulitis is caused by being too fat. Even though not all those who are obese develop cellulitis, being overweight can really trigger the development of cellulite. This is because too much fat under the skin tends to push the connective tissue creating a strain on the skin. Thus, cellulites forms. However, this is still dependent on the structure of the cells. If an individual’s cell structure does not inhibit the tendency to bulge or expand even if fat deposits accumulate, then there will be no cellulites.  So, the most important thing to remember here is to keep those connective tissues firm and strong and avoid accumulating excess fats to avoid cellulite development. How? Start an exercise routine program.

Transforming food into fat seems all too easy for most of us. Losing fat is far more difficult, and to accomplish this, we have only three alternatives: (1) decrease food intake and keep activity constant; (2) increase activity and keep food intake constant; or (3) combine both approaches: diet and exercise.
Physical activity can help reverse the results of inactivity. An hour of vigorous exercise burns up to 300 to 600 calories. If you also cut 300 to 500 calories from your daily menu, you can also lose weight at the rate of one to two pounds a week. Without exercise, you would have to eat 500 to 1,000 fewer calories a day to lose the same number of pounds in a week. Exercise is not for everyone who is over-fat, however. The severely obese person should exercise only under medical supervision to prevent strain on the cardiovascular system and connective tissue. And no one should restrict food intake drastically without consulting a doctor. Resorting to this kind of activity will only make the matter worse. Remember what happened to Mike? He thought that when he started dieting, he would eventually lose all the excess fats he accumulated. The problem is that he lost those connective tissues rather than excess fat. For people who are prone to cellulitis, this will be a greater problem. Losing connective tissues instead of fat by strict dieting can only make the skin more prone to greater problems but the fat cells are still there. That only means that the problem is not solved at all.
Hence, if you wish to lose those cellulite, it would be better to lose those fats first. The idea is to burn those fats by increasing your metabolism by 7.5% to 28% more than your normal rate.
It is for this reason that exercising is an important factor in losing cellulite. So for a more cellulite-free body, always engage in an exercise routine.
